Cooking With School Aged Children

Monday, July 5th, 2010

Children’s after school cooking classes are fairly easy to set up. You can contact various organizations, groups, day care centers and even schools to offer cooking classes for various ages. If you want to get really creative, have the children suggest their favorite foods that they have no idea how to make on their own and use them in your cooking classes.

Setting aside time each week (about an hour) should be adequate enough to have the children come to class, learn how to cook an entrée or dessert and help with part of the clean up. You will be teaching them more about nutrition, food safety, kitchen basics and how to communicate with each other better. Imagine a child’s face light up when they present their handmade meals to their parents?

How about considering children’s cooking classes for the summer, vacation bible schools or various summer camps? Summertime can be fun but can also quickly become boring to a child after their first or second week of “summer vacation”. Setting up and arranging cooking classes is very easy to do, whether it is for a small group or larger ones depending on the amount of help you have. You can research the cost of the supplies; your time and any help needed and figure that into the total cost. Offering such programs does take time to plan so having a partner and a good, solid business plan is always a good place to start. Healthy nutrition is a very big problem in our country and kids are eager and willing to learn new things. Children’s cooking classes are fast becoming of “demand” and could be a very fun and imaginative business opportunity.

Low Cost Health Insurance For Children

Sunday, February 14th, 2010

For parents who don’t have a health care plan, this can lead to an almost constant state of worry.

Children all face medical needs at some point. It may be something as simple as requiring a few stitches or the filling of a cavity. When medical care is needed the parent’s last concern should be how they will pay for it.

Most states actually offer free or very low cost health insurance for children. The cost of this insurance is largely dependent on the parents’ financial situation. If the parents cannot adequately provide health insurance for their child, the state will step in. Doctor visits, dental care and prescription eyeglasses are a few examples of what is covered.

For parents whose incomes don’t qualify them for this type of health coverage for their child, there are other avenues for them. Some of these don’t immediately come to mind and in fact some people aren’t aware of them at all.

Just as many employers offer health care plans to their employees and families, other organizations do the same thing. Many professional organizations have affordable health plans that cover their members and the dependents of the members.

Some religious groups also offer this type of plan. They establish a health care plan that covers their group members and although premiums are still payable, they are often at a discounted rate. For parents with children, this can be a great way to save money.

Another consideration is the private insurance companies that often offer health insurance to students. This insurance is primarily designed to protect the child in the event of an accident at school but the policy can be expanded to cover any instance. Talk with the insurance agent and express your needs.
